Publisher's beige cloth binding with illustrated dust jacket.

340pp. Illustrated by Benny Gruzin. Presentation inscription by the author to J. N. Smuts on the title page.

Binding tight. Contents clean. Dust jacket with age-associated wear along the edges and chipped at the spine ends. Small loss at the bottom edge of the front panel. Overall still a good copy.

'This is the story of the South African gold-fields; how they were discovered and how they have been developed and extended during the seventy-six years since the first Main Reef claims were pegged on the farm Langlaagte, three miles from the centre of the city of Johannesburg. It is surprising that in the literature of South Africa there has so far been no complete account of the gold mining industry. No one book has told us how Johannesburg was founded, how the great mines of the East Rand were developed and how the Orange Free State gold-field was discovered. Now an author has come forward with the book we have been waiting for. Here is the history of the mines, old and new, that have produced some two-thirds of the world's existing stock of gold. More than that it is a human story of the men who built this great industry.'
