First edition: 240 pages (including 51 pages advertisements), frontispiece portrait - a laid down photograph of Baines, title page vignette, ownership stamp half removed on the verso of the title page, large folding map in pocket in back cover, 3 plates, folding facsimile letter, engraved illustrations in the text, original pictorial dark green cloth with a gilt vignette of a galloping zebra on the upper cover, tiled gilt on the spine, slight foxing on the page edges, a very good copy.
Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography Volume 1 page 71: 'The volume is a most important work, and contains full information of every description upon the subject of the gold discoveries in Matabeleland and Mashonaland ... The book also contains an account of the gold discoveries in the Transvaal…' An unusual variant in dark green cloth.
The presentation inscription on the front free end paper reads: To.....(illegible) With Rob. White’s best compliments Brighton 86 Marine Parade July1881.
This volume was presented by Robert White, a very good friend of Thomas Baines. On the death of Baines White made a marble tablet to commemorate his friend with a handwritten inscription by him, which he sent to be placed in the Church in Durban where Baines is buried.
