Frontis plus xviii plus 466pp. Old rebind, Quarter leather over cloth.

Leather is split on hinges and badly torn on the spine. The cloth is still holding up fine with only minimal wear to corners. This book needs to be rebacked. Public library rubber stamp and library card holder pasted to front fixed EP and a number stamped to title page, otherwise no further stamps and markings. Small nick to right hand edge of title page and a 35mm tear to the right hand margin of 4 of the index pages. A small split tear in the text of page 451 but not detached and two 8mm tears to the edge of the second last page. Some grubby marks to a few of the text pages, otherwise clean for the most part. Binding is split in the middle of the text-block. Lacks the map. Please see photos for flaws not described.

In 1875 Gillmore rode via ox cart from Durban via Pietermaritzburg and Harrismith to Klerksdorp and then north to Zeerust across the Limpopo River into Matabele. He hunted zebra, giraffe, buffalo, eland, elephant, rhinoceros, lion, leopard and antelope. He crossed the Kalahari heading south to the diamond fields at Kimberly. He discusses the interaction with tribes and Boers he met.

An excellent read of travel, hunting and observations of South Africa in 1875. Mendelssohn p 601.
