Published in 1972 by the Rembrandt Group which was founded by South African billionaire Anton Rupert. Initially the business started as a tobacco company which eventually transitioned into the luxury goods sector. Today the company is split into two entities, Remgro, an investment company, and Richemont, a luxury goods group which owns the brands Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Montblanc, Piaget, Dunhill, Van Cleef & Arpels etc.
Rupert took great interest in the preservation of historical monuments and his company funded and published this work. He was also a leading figure in the conservation of natural history and was one of the founding members of the World Wildlife Fund.
