Enclosed with this book are the following five inserts:

1) A letter dated 11 September, 1901, signed by Lumsden to J Graves thanking him for his work for the Corps in South Africa. This letter, written from Prince's Chambers in London, is pasted onto a free front end paper. It was written prior to the publication of the book.

2) A second letter from Lumsden to Graves dated 17 September, 1903. This letter was written after the publication of the book. This letter has been pasted sideways and opposite the first letter. It has detached along the folds and is now in three separate pieces.

3) A folded slip with a Whitehall address stating "With Colonel Lumsden's Compliments." This is a loose insert.

4) A letter from Miss O.M. Harper enclosing a photograph of Graves and noting that he died in France in 1917. This is a loose insert.

5) A photograph of Cpl. Jack Graves, noting that he died of wounds in 1917 and a reference to page 355 of this book on the reverse. This is loosely inserted.

Original red buckram cloth binding with gilt titling on the spine and the upper board with the Corps colours on the spine. The boards have bevel edges. Top edge gilt. Frontispiece portrait of Lumsden. Black end papers. xiv prelims, 505 pages, black and white illustrations followed by a large fold out map.

CONDITION DETAILS: Thee binding is showing some wear and soiling. The spine is a bit sun faded and has wear at the head and foot. This is a heavy book and the hinges are starting to crack. The front free end paper is almost detached.
