Two volume set.
The first edition was published in 1879 as a single volume in Adelaide, Australia. This is the expanded second edition published in South Africa.
Bound in the original red cloth covered boards with gilt titling on the spines and black decorations on the upper boards. Volume one has xxiii prelims, 598 pages, 8 illustrations are called for in the "List of Illustrations", but 12 are present. Unfortunately the map at the rear is missing. Volume two has light green decorated end papers, xxi prelims, 600 pages, 14 illustrations and a large folding map at the rear.
The total number of illustrations is therefore 26. Only one map is present, in volume two, and only a stub indicating where the map in volume one should have been.
CONDITION DETAILS: The bindings are still holding, but the hinges are cracked and the last section of volume two, including the map, is loose. The bottom corner of page 600 in volume two has been torn off - not affecting any text. As usual, many of the plates are browned. Offered at a low price because the map at the end of volume one is missing.
