Pictorial cloth boards are stained and faded. Binding is a bit loose, but is intact. Upper right corner of frontispiece is torn off. A few smudges in the preliminaries. A few scattered small areas of foxing, but the text is clean and good. 464 Pages. There are numerous illustrations and portraits. Original map replaced by a photocopy.

The author describes all the conflicts in South Africa from the Battle of "Blumberg", (Blouberg), to the end of the Zulu War. He spoke Zulu fluently and gives a detailed description of the Zulu War.
