In 1916 the Union Government commissioned Buchan to undertake the official history of the South African forces in Europe. At the time he was serving in France and undertook the work after the signing of the Armistice. Twelve chapters, seven appendices, 404pp. dealing with Western Egypt, Delville Wood, Arras, Ypres, The Somme Retreat, Lys, The Advance to Victory etc... the appendices yielding important information on The Heavy Artillery, The South African Signal Company, The Medical Services, The Railways Companies, The Cape Auxiliary Horse Transport Companies, Victoria Crosses and Honours Won by South Africans, etc... 18 illustrations (portraits) and 22 maps. Book condition: dark blue boards are well worn and marked, uncut fore and bottom edges, with a faded spine (gilt Springbok emblem on front cover), end-papers and contents extensively foxed/marked, p287 torn/loose with some loss, making this a 'reading copy'.
