Spalding served for two and a half years as commander's clerk
on board the "Mississippi", the flagship of Matthew Perry's expedition
to Japan, and his book gives a personal, first-hand account of the voyage.
The plates depict two Japanese in traditional dress; a view of the Cape of
Good Hope; a scene in Ceylon; a scene in Loo Choo [Korea] with inhabitants
in traditional dress; a view of a junk in China; a scene near Yedo; a view of
Mount Fuji; and a view of the harbour at Dezima. The appendix includes
sailing directions for several eastern ports.
