Reissue May 1927: 294,(i list of Psychic Books by Conan Doyle) pages, red cloth titled in black on the upper cover and spine – worn at the top and bottom of the spine and at the corner, the binding is leaning slightly, some spotting on the page edges.
Presentation inscription on the title page reads, 'To Mrs Ellis, With all kind thoughts from Arthur Conan Doyle. Dec. 1928.' An empty envelope (from the Victoria Falls Hotel) addressed in Conan Doyle’s hand in tipped onto the front free endpaper which also bear the names of Evelyn Ellis and L.E. Ellis (see illustrations below). Also a book plate, presumably of the Ellis family, on the front paste-down endpaper.
Conan Doyle undertook a five-month tour of Africa in between November 1928 and February 1929 from Cape Town to Nairobi to lecture on spiritualism. He died on 7th July 1930 of a heart attack at his home in Crowbrough, Sussex.
The Land of Mist, the third and last of the Professor Challenger novels, is heavily influenced by Conan Doyles growing belief in spiritualism.
