Lacerda's Journey to Cazembe in 1878. Translated and annotated by Captain R.F. Burton, F.R.G.S., Also Journey of the Pombeiros P.J. Baptista and Amraro José, across Africa from Angola to Tette on the Zambeze. Translated by B.A. Beadle; and  Resume of the Journey of MM. Monteiro and Gambitto, by Dr. C.T. Beke.

271 pages, 8vo (220 x 145 mm), large folding map as frontispiece – torn at the first fold. An old repair with tape has left an unsightly mark, original blue cloth gilt – the cloth is dull and frayed at the top and bottom of the spine.

These translations were commissioned by the Royal Geographical Society in response to the increase in interest caused by Livingstone's account of Cazembe and central Africa. Penzer (N.M.) An Annotated Bibliography of Sir Richard Francis Burton (1923), pages 89-90. Burton's portion of the book ends on page 164. He had, however, written two appendices, which were rejected by the R.G.S. which considered them to be in the nature of controversy and criticism. Burton published them privately in Trieste in July of the same year.

Published by the Royal Geographical Society.
