304 pages, frontispiece portrait, 16 illustrations, 4 maps - 1 folding, red cloth spine gilt, a good copy in frayed and lightly soiled dust jacket.

From the preface: In writing this book my aim has been to make it a straightforward account of what a very young subaltern was called upon to do. In his Commando Deneys Reitz has given us one view of the South African War, and here I give another, not so thrilling I admit, yet revealing the same spirit, that this last of our great colonial wars was a gentlemanly one, for with a few exceptions, Britain and Boer fought cleanly.
