Frederik van Zyl Slabbert (1940-2010) was a charismatic political leader and formidable intellectual. He grew up in difficult circumstances in Pietersburg [now Polokwane]. He studied at Stellenbosch University and pursued a career in academia before winning the Rondebosch parliamentary seat for the Progressive Federal Party in 1974. He was the Party's leader from 1979 until he left Parliament in 1986. Then, together with Alex Boraine, he set up IDASA.
