'Few conflicts so compelled the interest of the public as the Zulu War of 1879. The crushing defeat of British forces at Isandhlwana, the dramatic defence of Rorke's Drift and the tragic death of the young Prince Imperial tell the story of a protracted struggle for superiority between the forces of Victorian England and the numerically overwhelming and savage Impis of Cetewayo.
This is the story of the last Zulu War. David Clammer, a rising historian and scholar of the period, writes with great knowledge and sympathy for his subject while the reckless courage and sheer ferocity of the battles is brought to the reader through the reproduction of some 50 little known glass lantern slides in colour which were painted during the Zulu War of 1879. Further material was added, including some superb paintings from private collections, Regimental museums and archives. Possibly the most notable illustration in the book - the original is in the Queen's Collection - is Lady Butler's famous painting of the Defence of Rorke's Drift and the sketches which she made in preparation for this work.
The Last Zulu Warrior is a unique publication of Africana and an important contribution to the historical record of Victorian South Africa.'
