324pp. Scarce premier deluxe full Leather binding with full gilt title/pictorial and decorative embelishments to front cover and spine. Gilt to all text-block edges. Blind embossed decoration to back cover. Tissue-guarded frontis. Several sepia plates, all present. Fold-out 'Skeleton Map South & Central Africa Shewing Dr Livingstone's Discoveries' at the back of the book.

Evidence of sympathetic refurbishments; polished leather, the weakened spine hinges have been impregnated with a flexible glue compound rendering them perfectly secure and intact. Neat cloth reinforcements made to EP hinges. Some foxing carrying through to the contents page. Further light fox-marks to certain pages, which are for the most part pleasingly clean. All in all a visually attractive and extremely presentable copy indeed.

'The present narrative - mainly designed for the young, and that class of modern readers who have neither the time nor the opportunity of becoming acquainted with the many sources from which it has been gleaned - has been written in brief intervals of leisure during the past eighteen months. It claims to be nothing more than a condensed outline of a remarkable story, the full details of which are either shut up in Books, beyond the reach of the many; or, locked up in files of Newspapers; or, buried in the Reports of the Geographical Society - this latter, a source totally inaccessible to the general reader.'
