Editor's note. Many Victorian travellers left records of what they observed on voyages around the globe; few have left the rich legacy of Thomas Baines. No ordinary traveller, Baines was a remarkable artist and a meticulous observer. As a Victorian he exhibited all the marvellous versatility which that era nourished in gifted individuals. He was able to straddle the fields of art and science with a flair that is lost to us today. His travels took him on numerous journeys into southern Africa and Australia. During these voyages of exploration, he kept journals that read as fascinating anthropological and naturalist accounts. He also interpreted the incidents, people, animals and landscapes that he encountered. In oils, watercolors and pencil, Thomas Baines left a remarkable visual record of the expanding British Empire.'
