2 volumes, [321] - 632 pages – continuous pagination, additional lithographic title page, lithographic frontispiece in Volume 1 - Livingstone attacked by the lion, frontispiece in Volume 2 – The meeting of Stanley and Livingstone, numerous tinted lithographic plates, decorative red cloth gilt with bevelled boards, blind stamped on the back covers, spines gilt, edges gilt, contents of volume 1 detached from the covers, preliminary pages are loose, volume 2 starting to wear at the front hinge, but holding on to the netting.
A South African Bibliography, Volume 4, pages 53-54, ascribes the authorship to John S. Roberts. The author's name does not appear in the book.
The last chapter contains information regarding Stanley's expedition to Africa, which commenced in August 1874. Latest information: a letter from Zanzibar dated November 16 1874 page 622.
Comment on page 631: it is all but certain that before the year 1875 closes, immense results will have been obtained for science and civilization.
