702 pages, chromolithographic frontispiece, additional chromolithographic title page, numerous chromolithographic plates, other tinted lithographic plates, coloured map, full elaborately decorated black leather, stamped in gilt and blind on both the upper and lower covers, ornately engraved brass edges with clasps, all edges gilt. Bound in leather of a poor quality which has been given a grain to resemble morocco, is friable and rubbed and splitting at the bottom of the front joint, light foxing on several pages.

A South African Bibliography, Volume 4, page 53/4, ascribes the authorship to John S. Roberts. This work, compiled from secondary sources, was issued by a number of different publishers and other commercial firms in Britain. An edition was published in Australia and there was a Welsh translation. The binding was offered in a variety of formats, the most expensive being the issue offered here with the elaborately stamped covers, brass edges and clasps. This binding resembles many Bibles produced in the Victoria era and so it is sometimes referred to as the Livingstone "Bible".
