Small Folio, bound in full dark brown morocco leather with heavy gilt bevelled embellishments to both covers and spine. All edges gilt with 632 pages text. Gilt decorations to front and rear boards which are fading, the gilt design on the boards shows a slave having just broken his chains and a lion subduing a man.

Seven raised bands on spine and has decoration in between. This is a heavy book about the size of a Victorian family bible, outstanding full colour and full page illustrations depicting various forms of tribal life, exploration etc.

The book also includes a full page frontispiece, colour map and there are a couple of slight tears on the pages near the front, foxing can be seen throughout. No date but probably about 1875's, in overall, the book/binding is in very good condition.

When the report of the death of Dr.Livingstone reached this country, many people refused to give it credit. He had so often been given up for lost and mourned as dead, his countrymen were reluctant to believe that the grand old man would never more be seen amongst them.

The present narrative-mainly designed for that large class of modern readers who have neither the time not the opportunity for becoming acquainted with the many sources from which it has been gleaned-has been written and compiled with the view of giving a graphic account of a memorable life story, the full details of which are either shut up in books beyond the reach of the majority of readers, locked in files of newspapers, or buried in the Reports and Journals of the Royal Geographical Society-these latter, a source totally inaccessible to the general reader.

The narrative is supplemented by details of the Livingstone Relief Expeditions under Mr. Stanley, Mr.Young, and Lieutenant Cameron, a brief Memoir of Mr.Stanley, extracts from the writings of other African travelers and missionaries, and by graphic details of the manners and customs of the peoples, and the animal and vegetable life of South and Central Africa.
