Beautifully illustrated by Mphahlele's friend, Peter Clarke. Mphahlele was nominated for a Nobel Prize in Literature in 1969. He changed his first name to Es'kia in 1977, and in 1983 became the first black professor at the University of the Witwatersrand. Whilst in Nigeria, he produced two books of short stories, this book and MAN MUST LIVE. Both are exceedingly hard to find. An early work by a giant of South African literature.
