From Hobbs (Philippa) and Rankin (Elizabeth) Listening to the Distant thunder : the art of Peter Clarke.‘A vibrant red sun dominates, flooding the shacks below with a warm glow, and suggesting to Clarke that 'there was a torch shining in the sky. The light is there to guide one not to give up hope.'
‘Es'kia Mphahlele(17 December 1919 – 27 October 2008) was a South African writer, educationist, artist and activist. He was born Ezekiel Mphahlele but changed his name to Es'kia in 1977. He is celebrated as the Father of African Humanism. He was one of the founding figures of modern African literature. His journey from childhood in the slums of Pretoria to literary icon was an odyssey both intellectually and politically. As a writer, he brought his own experiences in and outside South Africa to bear on his short stories, fiction, autobiography and history, developing the concept of African humanism. His fiction and other writing have been important bridges between African and Western societies. The critical thoughts expressed in his writing, reveal the foresight of someone who challenges us to "know our Africa intimately, even while we tune into the world at large".’
