This excellent book by Malcolm Woolfson of Durban, is a chronicle of some of the events in the history of the performing arts in Natal, culminating in the new Natal Playhouse. In its pages is the story of those who kept the arts alive through the good and bad times in this province. Today the performing arts flourish in Natal thanks mainly to the enlightened attitude and support of the authorities
The years 1971 to 1986 in South Africa have seen an enormous growth in the cultural and entertainment life of our country. With the opening of the Natal Playhouse, the cycle, which commenced with the Nico Malan Theatre Centre in Cape Town in 1971 and was followed by the State Theatre, Pretoria and the Sand du Plessis Theatre in Bloemfontein, is now complete. Having therefore now been provided with an excellent infrastructure, it is incumbent upon the arts' administrators of South Africa to rise to the challenge and take the country and all its citizens to a new cultural level. I personally have been lucky enough, through my arts administration career, to have been involved in these projects and in doing so have lived through and bear witness to the entire period as South Africa has come of age, so to speak, in its performing arts history.
It is NAPAC's intention to utilise the Natal Playhouse for the benefit of all Natal's citizens in the exciting years that lie ahead for South Africa. In the years to come, it is my hope that artists and audiences alike may find the complex a haven from the humdrum, a challenge and inspiration to the senses and a beacon of enjoyment and sanity that only the performing arts are uniquely able to provide.
