'Written on his travels to India, this epic poem by the great Portuguese poet Camoes, was first published in 1572, and was based partly on the exploits of Vasco da Gama, to whom he was distantly related. The best-known English translation is by W. J. Mickle.' - South Africa in Print, 1952, page 28. This is the first edition of Mickle's translation.

The work celebrates the discovery of a sea route to India by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama (1469–1524) and also focuses on Portuguese voyages and discoveries of the 15th- and 16th-centuries.
