'Written on his travels to India, this epic poem by the great Portuguese poet Camoes, was first published in 1572, and was based partly on the exploits of Vasco da Gama, to whom he was distantly related. The best-known English translation is by W. J. Mickle.' - South Africa in Print, 1952, page 28. This is the first edition of Mickle's translation.
