The Magus was published by Jonathan Cape in the United Kingdom in 1966 and in the United States by Little, Brown and Company the same year. An instant success, it would go on to be named by Modern Library in their 100 Best Novels list, and was placed at number 67 on the BBC's survey The Big Read. An excellent copy of an important work.
Fowles' abstruse and esoteric classic. Fabulous postmodern achievement; Fowles' first novel written but his third to be published. Rich with poetico-mystic symbolism and historical resonance, THE MAGUS captivates even as it mystifies, armed with the only plot elements that never fail: a young man, his wicked mentor, a Greek island, and the whole of the Western literary canon.
