A product of the Apartheid years, this book nevertheless documents a people and community as an integral part of the Cape Town scene with a unique lifestyle that has since been eroded by the development of the city and social and political changes in the country. Index, examples of Malay Calendars, Bibliography. Publication No. 1 in the Race Relations Series of the sub-department of Coloured Affairs, Department of the Interior, Union of South Africa. Includes plan of the residential blocks of the Malay Quarter, 50 black-and-white photographs by E v Z Hofmeyr, colour photographs by C.A. Luckhoff and J Luckhoff. Reproductions of artwork depicting the Malay Quarter. Pages [1-10]11-90 [91]. The Dust Jacket has some insect damage on the front fold, some edge wear and small folds at the top of the spine. The spine is slightly faded. Name stamp and bookplate of previous owner on endpapers. The endpapers have browned where the cover-folds end and all the book's text pages have browned just around the edges. The many photographs are on glossy paper and those pages are clean and clear. Green cloth-covered boards with Balkema logo in gilt on front cover and gilt title on spine.
