xlviii, 700 pages, [liv] pages of plates: illustrations (some colour), colour frontispieces, tables (some folding), map. Quarto. Half calf & pictorial cloth with gilding. All edges gilt. Edges of spine rubbed. No. 153 of an edition limited to 500 copies.

In the foreword, Lt.-Col. J. Stevenson-Hamilton states that it was important to stimulate interest in the larger mammalian forms, because they were so threatened "…by ever spreading industrial civilization". He was also of the opinion that this book would become the "standard reference work on the subject for many years…" He was proved correct in both views.
