First edition 3rd impression: 338 pages + 1 – map of British East Africa, frontispiece, numerous illustrations, foxing on preliminary and end pages, blue cloth with gilt vignette of a lion's head on upper cover, spine titled gilt, slightly insect scarred on the back cover, top edge gilt, a very good copy.

Fist published in October 1907 – reprinted in November and December of the same year.

Loosely inserted is a pamphlet Man Eaters with three colour illustrations (130 x180mm) by Penny Miller and text by T.V. Bulpin.

Czech (Kenneth) An Annotated Bibliography of African Big Game Hunting Books 1785 -1999, page 213 -214: One of the most famous of all African hunting titles this describes the slaughter of railroad workers building the Uganda Railway by a pair of man eating lions. The first half of the book relates Patterson's efforts to destroy the man-eaters, while the remaining chapters detail efforts to hunt rhino near Tsavo, then lion and a variety of pains game on the Athi River.
