Czech calls Man-Eaters "one of the most famous of all African hunting titles, [which] describes the slaughter of railroad workers building the Uganda Railway by a pair of man-eating lions"; its extraordinary story has inspired no less than three Hollywood film versions.
John Henry Patterson (1867-1947) is a fascinating figure. Born in Ireland, he joined the British army at 17 and served with distinction in the Second Boer War, winning the DSO in November 1900. During the Home Rule Crisis of 1913-14 he commanded the West Belfast regiment of the UVF and in the First World War was officer commanding the Zionist Mule Corps at Gallipoli and what was known as the Jewish Legion of the Royal Fusiliers, seen as a forerunner of the modern Israeli Defence Force.
