Methuen's Colonial Library first edition in its original binding. This 119-year-old book shows signs of wear. 4 cm tear on front top edge of spine, cracking and some peeling along back edge. Library code at base of spine in white ink. Probably a review copy, as title page is stamped 'with the publishers compliments' and a copy of a newspaper review has been pasted over the front endpapers. The bookplate of the Editor of the Cape Times, Mr G. H. Wilson, is pasted in the half title page.

Pages rough cut. Pencil note on page 116 by someone who was present at the event described.

Pages [i-vi]vii-xv [1-3]4-500.

Baden-Powell was with the 13th Hussars. He writes an almost photographic description of events of the 1896 campaign in Matabeleland and Mashonaland, which includes an interesting chapter on Scouting work in war. A lively description, and a chatty style make it interesting reading, as is the preface to his Mother.
