Being a Narrative of the Campaign in Suppressing the Native Rising in Matabeleland and Mashonaland. With nearly 100 illustrations

Fourth edition: 500 pages + 47 pages publisher's catalogue, frontispiece, numerous black and white illustrations, map, original blue cloth with a gilt vignette of an Matabele warrior on the upper cover, titled gilt on the spine, corners slightly bumped, a good copy.

This edition contains a new prefatory letter headed The Matabele and the Boer War, a letter from General Baden-Powell, South African Constabulary, Zuurfontein: Transvaal, 20th Jan. 1901. Methuen, the publisher, had written to Baden-Powell requesting a new edition of The Matabele Campaign in light of the fame generated by his success in leading the successful siege of Mafeking. He comments, 'Good scouting was found to be essential in the campaign: it has proved too be more than ever vitally essential under the new conditions of modern warfare and large forces.......would that everybody had such a reminder before them - applicable as it is to all circumstances whethere of peace of of war, of life, or of death -  "BE PREPARED"
