THE JOURNAL OF THE MOUNTAIN CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA (1931 to date)

114 volumes issued between 1894 and 211

With: Three index volumes: Volumes 1 to 71, 1894-1968. Volumes 72 to 81, 1969 to 1978 & Volumes 82-103, 1979-2000

The first issue is dated January, 1894 and comprises 47 pages. The name was change with issue 34 in 1931 (‘To better reflect its purpose’). The early issued are in printed paper wrappers, later many appear with card wrappers and since issue 93 (no. 92) are bound in pictorial laminated boards (hard cover).

Some of the wrappers of the early issues are chipped and frayed and some wrappers are detached but all are present. The card covers of issues 15 (1912) is torn with some loss and likewise the cover of no. 34 (1931). There is foxing on the page edges of many early issues.

‘In the year 1893, over a century ago, horse-drawn carts and carriages rattled over the cobbled streets of colonial Cape Town and the clarion call of the fish-horn floated in the air to warn housewives that the fish vendor had arrived in the neighbourhood. The fledgling ‘Mountain Club’ was barely two years old when at a Committee Meeting held on 25 October of that year Dr Rudolph Marloth proposed that an Annual be published and financed by the Club. This proposal was unanimously approved and Dr Marloth, C.W. Adams and H.L. Harris were appointed to form an editorial committee to produce the first issue. Six days later members were invited to submit contributions.’

‘Since 1894, except for 1897 when no Journal was produced and except for three occasions (1901/2, 1904/5 and 1909/1910) when the material for two years were combined into one issue, the Journal has appeared annually without fail.’

From an essay entitled, ‘One Hundred Times. The 100th Issue of The Journal of the Mountain Club of South Africa,’ by Colin Inglis and Claude Katz, which appeared in volume 100, 1997, pages 6-18.

No mention is made of the size of the edition of the early issues but in Number One 369 names appear in the list of members.
