In 1890 construction was begun on the Eastern Railway Line, which would grant the land-locked Transvaal Republic much-needed access to a shipping port via Lorenzo Marques (Maputo). A branch line was proposed from Komatipoort to the north-eastern Transvaal that would service the goldfields of the Murchison range. The concession to build this line was awarded to French entrepreneur Eugene Oppenheim. He obtained this concession the old-fashioned way by bribing the greater part of the members of the Volksraad (Transvaal Senate) in exchange for their support. Once construction began he proceeded to enrich himself through fraudulent transactions at the expense of the Government. When the Government finally realised what was going on the Oppenheim syndicate, together with its wake of unscrupulous businessmen, had already embezzled over one million pounds.
