Mendelssohn (Sidney) SOUTH AFRICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY volume 2, page 635 :The Northumberland Fusiliers were early in the field during the South African War (1899-1902), and soon after their arrival at the Cape were despatched to De Aar, early in October 1899. They took part in Lord Methuen's campaign and were engaged in many of the historic battles, the regiment participating in more than an average share of the disasters of the war, which reduced their effective numbers by fully 50 per cent, by the year 1900.
