Second (enlarged) edition: xxxiii +142 pages and 119 lithographic plates each partly coloured, green cloth gilt. A few plates are lightly foxed. There is foxing on the page edges and this extends to the margins of a number of the plates. Pages xx - xxv of the Introduction are soiled and there is some off-setting of the text.
The first edition was published in the 'Transactions of the South African Philosophical Society,' volume V, part I, 1888 and contained 36 plates. This edition was edited by Harriet M.L. Bolus and Alice M. Greene, the publication being delayed by the First World War. 'All the species recorded from the Cape Peninsula are figured here except Acrolophia sphaerocarpa (schltr. and Bolus) and Pterygodium bifidum (Schltr.) of which no specimens have been found by us or by any other living collector to our knowledge.' (Editors in their preface to the second edition).
