Second (enlarged) edition: xxxiii +142 pages and 119 lithographic plates each partly hand coloured, original green cloth gilt - stains on the back cover. A few plates are very lightly foxed. Some spotting on the page edges. Pencil annotations on the back paste-down endpaper. A very good copy.

The first edition was published in the 'Transactions of the South African Philosophical Society,' volume V, part I, 1888 and contained 36 plates. This edition was edited by Harriet M.L. Bolus and Alice M. Greene, the publication being delayed by the First World War. 'All the species recorded from the Cape Peninsula are figured here except Acrolophia sphaerocarpa (schltr. and Bolus) and Pterygodium bifidum (Schltr.) of which no specimens have been found by us or by any other living collector to our knowledge.' (Editors in their preface to the second edition).
