Canadian born Theal came to South Africa at an early age and worked as a teacher, journalist, publisher and unsuccessful miner. He was the most prolific and influential South African Historian, Archivist and Genealogist in the late 19th and early 20th Century. He died in Wynberg Cape Town in 1919.
