Written Originally in High German by Peter Kolben, done into English from the original by Mr Medley illustrated with copper plates

First English edition. 2 Volumes – volume 1 xviii + 365 pages, volume II xviii + 363 pages, frontispieces in both volumes, in volume 1 a portrait of Kolben, 27 plates – 2 folding, map in volume 2, plan, book plates on front paste down end papers, publishers advertisements on a separate leaf at the end of each volume, light foxing throughout, full leather rebacked and titled gilt on the spine - Medley's Cape of Good Hope, housed in a recent specially made green cloth slipcase, a very good set.

A South African Bibliography volume 3 page 7: The work is “Not so properly a translation as an abridgement of Mr. Kolben's History”

Subtitle in volume 2 differs: The Present state of the Cape of Good Hope Volume 11 containing the natural history of the Cape, or a particular description of all the sorts of animals and vegetables in that neighbourhood….

The plates are based on those in the 1719 German edition. Volume 1 contains the plates depicting Hottentots customs, Vol 11 the natural history illustrations. The 3 plates in volume 1 Buchu, Dacha and Kanna do not appear in the German edition. There are 2 unumbered plated in volume 1. Volume 2 has 10 plates.

The plates in both volumes are bound in the incorrect sequence.
