Original green boards with protected dustcover.

This work is an authoritative study of the eighty two known species of the genus Protea occurring in Southern Africa south of the Limpopo River. Each species is described in full scientific detail with additional information, habitat and cultivation.

An introductory chapter describes the discovery and history of proteas from 1597 to the present day.

Complementing Dr. John Rorke's authoritative text are approximately ninety colour plates with most proteas illustrated to life size, principally by a leading South African botanist artist, Fay Anderson. The historical section includes reproductions of proteas cultivated in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.

This book is the culmination of many years of study by past and present botanists and artists.
