The introduction by Anna Smith is in itself an interesting historical statement. Moodie collected, translated and prepared for publication an enormous number of government documents relating to the "condition and treatment of the native tribes of South Africa". These documents date from 1649 to about 1840. His translation of early Dutch documents have been praised for their accuracy and expression. In many cases the original government material no longer exists and The Record is the only source for historians researching the period. His honest and objective information sometimes produced negative reactions when misgovernment and corruption were thus exposed. Moodie was highly regarded as a man of honour and integrity.
