12 mo (180 x 120 mm); cloth-backed boards, with the original printed wrappers mounted on the boards; lettered in black on spine; new endpapers; pp. (xii) + 114; three battle plans. Original wrappers (retained in re-binding) browned and rubbed. Very good condition. A singularly uncommon title. (Hackett, p. 201; Mendelssohn II, p. 623) Excerpt from Chapter II: \"The majority of those who were present at Colenso can say with truth that they never saw a Boer. In the same way the Boer artillery was well covered, and their guns could only be located by their flashes as they were fired. Against such tactics the exposure of field batteries in the open only conferred an additional advantage on the already strongly posted enemy. This, however, could not be obviated. What had not been foreseen in peace could not be remedied then. Every effort was made later on to induce both officers and men to do all that they could to get what cover there was. To abolish the system to which our faith had been pinned would probably at such a time have done more harm than good. It was, of course, foreseen that the tactics employed by the enemy at Colenso would probably be repeated elsewhere on some future occasion. But even when confronted by this fact, how was a new artillery drill-book to be written with which to face it then?\"
