This work was originally published in three parts in wrappers with an incomplete fourth part, between 1868 and 1870. They were issued in a bound volume in 1870. Dr. Callaway presented unsold copies to The Folk-Lore Society and they issued them as Vol. XV of their publications in 1884. The copy on offer is one of the Folk-Lore Society issues and is effectively still a bound edition of the original printings. In the original terracotta binding with gilt and black decoration and lettering. An immaculate just about fine, crisp, unmarked copy of his scarce title.
Henry Callaway (1817-1890), surgeon and missionary, founded the Spring Vale mission settlement at Ekukanyeni near Pietermaritzburg in 1855. He published two major works on Zulu religious beliefs and other customs, 'Nursery Tales, Traditions, and Histories of the Zulus (1866-1868) and 'The Relgious System of the Amazulu.
