The Rhodesian Press-The History of the Rhodesian Printing and Publishing Company, written by Mr.W.D.Gale, author, historian and a former employee of the Company, from material gathered from official Company records and the files of its newspapers. On a day in early June 1891,a tall, fair-haired young man stepped shakily from a wagon in the primitive settlement of Fort Salisbury. It was the end of a long, slow, painful and hazardous journey from Kimberley, which he had left just after Christmas of 1890. He had been sent by the Argus newspaper group to represent them as their agent in Mashonaland. The arrival of William Ernest Fairbridge was the culmination of a series of events that dated back to 1875 and the voyage of the good ship, Teuton, from London to the Cape.

Its passenger list contained the names of two young men who were destined, each in his own way, to make an enduring impression on the country of their adoption. They were Cecil John Rhodes and Francis Joseph Dormer. Thus these three men contributed towards the beginning of The Rhodesian Press.
