Mendelssohn (Sidney) SOUTH AFRICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY volume 2, page 635-636: This celebrated Brigade came into existence in the year 1800, and was numbered the 95th Rifles at the end of the year 1802 ; it was sent to South Africa for the first time in 1846, where it took part in the Kaffir War and the battle of Boomplaats. The next visit to the Cape was made in 1851, where the Brigade was again employed in a Kaffir War. Nearly half a century elapsed before the Rifle Brigade was sent to South Africa for the third time, when it took part in the South African War (1899-1902) in the Natal campaign, and full particulars of the services and losses of the Brigade during these hostilities will be found in Chapters IX, X, and XI, and in the Appendix.
