With three etchings , and over seventy other illustrations and two maps of the Congo, by the Author.  470 pages. 32 catalogue list pages.

The author states that this work is not intended as a narrative of great pioneering exploration, this having been done by others before him such as Stanley, nor of scientific research, the author not being qualified to do so, but rather a guide-book for would-travellers to the region or "stay-at-homes" who are interested in the subject.

This copy has been rebound in cloth with new endpapers. Two folding maps, the pages are clean and bright, foxing to the title page only. The large map at the rear has some tape repairs done.

The preface is dated February 1884, this might be a first edition,
