With over 160 years of legacy, The Royal Hotel has enjoyed a reputation as Durban's finest and has constantly re-invented itself by adapting favourably to changing economic conditions; softcover, 125 pages.
The history of the hotel is presented in a strongly pictorial context, recounting its early history as 'McDonald's Commercial Hotel' in the 1830s, then 'The Masonic', and finally 'The Royal'. The text is accompanied by superbly reproduced early photographs and paintings of Durban, from views across the Berea, the Bluff, and commercial activities in and around the city, including a picture of the Marine Hotel by David Goldblatt before its demolition. Paintings included are by the likes of C.F. Angus, P.L.G. Cloete, Capt. Robert Jones Garden, Katherine Saunders, Thomas Bowler, Robert Bristow Tatham, etc...
The book is housed in a slipcase with wrap-around band.
