1868 first edition

262 pages (plus 16 pages "A Condensed Catalogue of Works Published by Letts")

Condition: original mustard-coloured cloth boards in good condition, blind-ruled edges, gilt illustration on front board, corners bumped, spine ends slightly frayed, spine darkened. Dark brown endpapers very good (bookplate "Baird of Urie" on f.p.e.p.), joint after title-page cracked, and first few gatherings loose/cracked. The condition of the text is very good and clean throughout with spotting and foxing being concentrated at the first and last few pages. An area of browning/soiling affects the bottom margin from pages 226-231 and 241 to the end. The Key Map showing the route taken by Livingstone and the search expedition's route is spotted (more so on the reverse). All tissue guards protecting the illustration pages are foxed, with some of the foxing being offset onto the images (approx. 20% offset). The top edge is tinted brown.
