Second edition: xv, (iv), 206 pages, engraved frontispiece, 13 engraved plates, full crimson morocco, with gilt decoration on both covers and on the spine in panels, contrasting title labels, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers (bookplate on the front paste-down endpaper), all edges gilt. Some very light foxing and wear at the corners. A very good copy.
First published in 1849, Ruskin set out his principles or lamps of architecture. He later expanded this into the three-volumes of The Stones of Venice (see next lot) and provided a basis for the mid-nineteenth century Gothic revival in England.
