An excerpt from page 77 reads: 'Truly the Rand is on the eve of great developments. New mines will be opened under the same old circumstances of great affluence for the promotors, but under far worse conditions ever for the workers. Fortunes will roll into the pockets of individual promotors; complete control will be ensured to these promotors; their houses and their all-powerfull Chamber will flourish; and the mines will be opened only where they dictate - that is, on their own properties. But the poor will be more than ever with us....'
