Henry B. Guppy, a medical doctor and naturalist, visited the Solomon Islands in 1882. He was the surgeon on HMS Lark, which was conducting a surveying voyage in the Western Pacific. Guppy was funded by the Royal Society of London to explore the interior of Guadalcanal , but he was prevented from so doing by illness. He published two books on his experiences: The Solomon Islands and Their Natives (1887), and The Solomon Islands: Their Geology, General Features, and Suitability for Colonization (1887). (Guppy 1886, 1887).

This book covers diseases, tattooing, cannibalism, vocabulary, ethnology, etc. of the Solomon Islands.

  • Hard cover: Good to Very Good condition. Royal blue buckram boards with gilt titling on spine and front board, and gilt image of aboriginal people of the islands on front board. Shelf wear and scuffing along the edges, corners worn and bumped. Light marks on boards.
  • Foxing on first 3 pages and from page 368 to the end.
  • Text block is tight and intact. The contents are clean and bright. Lightly aged.
  • Binding is tight.
  • Contain contents, index, map, black and white photographs and drawings.
