Original scarlet 1/2 leather and and red boards, with gilt lettering to spine and outlines to boards,marbled endpapers, and edges, complete with dustcover with small loss to top of front head of dustcover. The book bound at Bath by Cedric Chivers & Co, Limited. Letterpress and plates printed at London, England, by The Sun Engraving Co Limited.

William John Burchell, of Fulham (1781-1863). Scientist and Artist. Visited South Africa during the years 1810-24, published at nine guineas in two volumes, and which today fetch thirty-nine, there appear twenty coloured-plates and ninety-six vignettes.

Hitherto these represented all that had been published of Burchell's 500 drawings, executed on his 4500 miles of travel in South Africa.

Having regard to its special character this book is issued in an edition limited to 275 copies for sale.
